The extended community of L'Arche Portland stretches far beyond the boundaries of our two homes in SE Portland. We have supporters all across the country and even across the globe. These people offer so much to our community, often supporting us financially for many years. As a way of expressing gratitude to and staying connected with these members who are unable to spend time in our homes, we invite them to become L'Arche Prayer Partners.
Those who accept our invitation send us a photograph of themselves and we create a prayer card with their photo and a short description of their connection to the community. These cards then occupy an important part of the nightly prayer rituals in our homes. After dinner, the house gathers to light a candle and to share a moment of reverence and intentionality together. One piece of this ritual involves drawing a prayer card and offering prayers of gratitude and support for the person or family pictured.
At Nehalem House, the prayer cards have become Joni's contribution to the evening ritual. Each night she goes to the mantle and gets the cards before sitting down and shuffling them meticulously. When it's time she either picks one or holds them out for someone else to pick.
